A modern example of DOCG and DOP Puglia wines

In the heart of the Murge area in Apulia, the heel of Italy’s boot, where the sun kisses the earth with great intensity and the sea hugs the Adriatic coast, nearby, that Azienda Agricola Santa Lucia has been preserving for four centuries the same passion, deep connection with the territory and ambition for excellence in producing native organic DOCG and DOP wines and Extra-virgin Olive Oil deriving from the local variety “Coratina” olives. Year after year, we safeguard and develop the wine traditions of this area, in particular, the culture linked to the Nero di Troia and Bombino Nero grapes.

Vineyards and cellars are located in Corato, a village halfway between the magnificent Castel del Monte, the octagonal castle of UNESCO Heritage, and the Romanic Cathedral of Trani, which dominates the white stone-made Venetian harbor. Here, we grow native vines and centuries-old olive trees, respecting the environment and the traditions of local vine growers, and produce modern organic and artisanal wines that can be tasted over the tables of five continents. Our top-class exclusive national distributor has the leading site in the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy, and we export independently to Australia, South Corea, Japan, Canada, the United States, Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Morocco.

Our wine production amounts to 50,000 bottles per year.

Santa Lucia vineyards: part of Perrone Capano family history since 1628

The Santa Lucia vineyards are part of the history of the Perrone Capano family, which has lived in the area since 1628 and has had registered productions since 1822. Ever since, many generations of lawyers and professional vine growers have succeeded. Until the first half of ‘900, vine and olive yards were the primary investments of the land bourgeoisie. Today, there is passion and careful research to optimize men’s work with climate, land, vines, and land plots. Words that French vinegrowers summarize in just three letters: “cru”.

Regarding enology, our duty was to manage the impetuous taste of Apulian native products. Preserving their typical structure but, at the same time, making it elegant, modern, fluent and unique. Taste is subjective, not so is quality. Whenever a glass is emptied, the message is unequivocal.

Nero di Troia, Bombino Nero, naturally spicy extra-virgin “Coratina” olive oil, and then chicory, wild herbs, fava beans, broccoli sprouts, pecorino, stracciata cheese of Puglia, and raw seafood are some of the main typical foods of our land. They are unique, fresh, at km zero, as in our kitchen garden.

In Puglia, the quality/price ratio is often excellent. Uncommon and rare products, usually little known (red olives in the pan, lampascioni little onions, caroselli, scupatizzi, semola bread, and so on). It’s a joy for amateurs and experts, but more must be done about communication. Compared to other wine areas worldwide, Apulian wines suffer a delay today fulfilled by technology, the use of cold mainly, and the evolution of the countrymen mentality. Our vines faithfully express the flavors of this territory and aim to become one of the quality emblems of Central Puglia.

Drinking a ten-year-aged basic red wine at a reasonable price is not frequent. Combining structure, fruit, smoothness, and cleanliness of taste in enologic meaning. We’re mainly talking about our “Il Melograno” red wine without any intention to minimize the dignity of our other wines. All the bottles leaving our cellars tell an artisan story of care, simplicity and respect for the environment. Without self-celebration, our wines and extra-virgin olive oil will speak for themselves on our behalf.

In Santa Lucia, near the village of Corato, organic farming is not only a production method; it’s a commitment to sustainability reflected in farm management, our lives, and limited-size productions. We wish to keep it as it is, starting from manual harvesting up to the commitment of two families working in excellent synergy: one of native farmers, the other of law professionals coming from Trani first and from Naples later, at the end of ‘800: ourselves, farm owners since 1628.

They’ve been with us since 1985. Vito Senior used to work with our ancestors in the early ‘900. Fierce countrymen, they love and live the farm 365 days per year. They are the heart of it, as they have always preferred flora to market.
